Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission Awards Grants for Care of Pennsylvania’s Significant Historical and Archival Records

Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) recently approved 31 Historical & Archival Records Care (HARC) grants totaling nearly $200,000 to help preserve Pennsylvania’s significant historical records and make them accessible.

The grant awards range from $2,180 for the Hershey Community Archives to digitize a weekly newsletter issued from 1934 through 1951 that served as weekly documentation for the community of Hershey, PA, when no local newspapers were published; to $8,016 for the City of Pittsburgh to digitize and rehouse 24 volumes of City Council minute books from 1816 to 1877 and digitize 109 volumes of minutes and legislation from former municipalities annexed by the city; to $13,590 for Drexel University Lenfest Center for Cultural Partnerships to improve documentation of and access to historically valuable records related to African American history.

HARC grants fund projects designed to improve the preservation and accessibility of historically significant records maintained by local governments, historical societies and academic institutions.

The grants were based on a competitive review of the applications by a subcommittee of the Pennsylvania State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB). HARC grants are administered by the Pennsylvania State Archives, a bureau within PHMC. Funding for the awards spans two years. Grants $5,001 and above must include matching funds.

SHRAB operates under federal regulations governing the National Historical Publications & Records Commission and serves as the central advisory body for historical records planning in the state.
