Harrisburg, PA – The Department of General Services (DGS) is proud to announce that Pennsylvania Capitol Police Officer Bradley Rohrbaugh and his K9 partner, Rex, have been recognized by Governor Josh Shapiro with a Governor’s Awards for Excellence, one of the Commonwealth’s highest honors for state employees.
Officer Rohrbaugh and K9 Rex are being recognized for their decisive and courageous actions during a rapidly evolving incident at the Pennsylvania Capitol Complex in late 2024. While responding to a report of a person armed with a firearm near the complex grounds, Officer Rohrbaugh — relying on training, instinct, and teamwork with his K9 partner — helped bring the situation to a swift and safe resolution.
During the confrontation, Rex was struck by gunfire. Following a lengthy recovery, the K9 returned to full duty alongside Officer Rohrbaugh. Their bravery not only protected fellow officers and members of the public but may have averted an even greater tragedy.
“Officer Rohrbaugh and K9 Rex exemplify the very best of public service,” said Secretary of General Services Reggie McNeil. “Their quick thinking and commitment to duty prevented an already dangerous situation from escalating further. It is a powerful reminder of the dedication that Capitol Police officers bring to work every day.”
“These awards are a testament to the discipline, courage, and integrity of both Officer Rohrbaugh and K9 Rex,” said Capitol Police Superintendent Joe Jacob. “Their actions in the face of uncertainty reflect the highest standards of law enforcement, and I could not be prouder to see them both recognized in such a befitting manner.”
The Governor’s Awards for Excellence recognize employees across the Commonwealth who demonstrate exceptional dedication, innovation, and service. Officer Rohrbaugh and K9 Rex were among 99 recipients formally honored during a statewide ceremony hosted by Governor Shapiro earlier this week.
