Harrisburg, PA - Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities Secretary Wendy Spicher applauded students participating in the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) 2024 Community Bank Case Study Competition. Twenty-seven student teams from 21 colleges and universities across the nation have entered the competition.

The two teams representing Pennsylvania in the 2024 competition are:

  • Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania working with First Citizens Community Bank
  • Rosemont College working with Asian Bank

“The Community Bank Case Study Competition provides undergraduate students with a practical and engaging learning opportunity outside of the classroom,” said Secretary Spicher. “It’s exciting to see these young adults take an interest in and gain a broader understanding of the role that community banks play in the financial industry. I’m also appreciative to the community banks who partner with these student teams, because it truly reinforces their commitment to the communities they serve.”

Now in its tenth year, the Case Study Competition offers undergraduate students from all fields of study the opportunity to partner with local community banks to gain first-hand knowledge of the banking industry. This year, teams are tasked with studying the closures of Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank, and First Republic Bank, identifying the case study bank’s expectations for regulatory and supervisory change, and how they use social media in their daily operations.

In 2023, students from Messiah University in Grantham, Cumberland County, partnered with LINKBANK and earned third place in the nationwide competition

Each student member and faculty advisor of the first-place winning team will receive a $1,000 scholarship and present their findings at the Community Bank Research Conference. Their work will be published in the annual CSBS Journal of Community Bank Case Studies. Teams that place second and third will also receive scholarships and have their works published in the journal.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams will be announced on July 15, 2024. The winning team will attend the 2024 Community Banking Research Conference in St. Louis, Missouri in October 2024.
