Celebrating 150 Years of the Corry State Fish Hatchery
In fall of 2026, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is excited to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Corry State Fish Hatchery (SFH) in Erie County. Originally known as the “Western State Fish Hatchery,” the later renamed Corry SFH opened in 1876 after Governor John Hartranft and the General Assembly appropriated $2,000 for its purchase from a local landowner. The facility has since become the PFBC’s longest continuously operating facility within the SFH system. Corry SFH exclusively raises coldwater species and accounts for approximately 10% of the PFBC’s total adult stocked trout production statewide. In 2026, eight full-time employees and one seasonal employee work to annually produce 330,000 Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and golden Rainbow Trout, which are stocked into public waterways.
