Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities Announces June Consumer Financial Protection Events to Help Pennsylvanians Invest Wisely and Avoid Fraud

Pennsylvanians encouraged to call 1-866-PACOMPLAINT, visit pa.gov/consumer, or email consumer@pa.gov to report financial, insurance, and consumer concerns.

Harrisburg, PA – Financial Education, Protection, and Outreach staff from the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS) will be hosting and participating in numerous presentations for groups of seniors, service providers, and the general public throughout the month of June helping them avoid scams, understand signs of fraud, and avoid identity theft.

June outreach events, in partnership with the listed organizations, will be held in-person and are open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Pennsylvanians are also encouraged to call 1-866-PACOMPLAINT, visit pa.gov/consumer, or email consumer@pa.gov to report scams, resolve financial and insurance issues, and access help from the Commonwealth. Governor Josh Shapiro launched the new, centralized consumer protection hotline, website, and email address to make it easier for Pennsylvanians to report scams, resolve financial and insurance issues, and access help from the Commonwealth. No matter the issue, consumers can get routed to the right agency for help.

Fraud BINGO: A fun and interactive presentation that teaches consumers how to protect themselves from investment fraud by playing a familiar game – BINGO!

$camJam: A fun and interactive event that brings experts in law enforcement and state agencies together to educate target audiences on how to protect their money from financial fraud and abuse. Between key sessions, attendees get to play Fraud BINGO.

Senior Expos: Senior Expos offer older adults and care providers resources and information that may allow them to live a more active lifestyle. Expos are free to the public and no registration is required. DoBS provides consumer protection, financial education, and investor education materials and publications free of charge.

Popular Scams and How to Avoid Them: Every day, people are scammed by so-called “professionals” looking to separate them from their hard-earned money. This presentation introduces commonly used tactics, what to look for, and how to avoid them.

Berks County Elder Abuse Symposium: Elder financial abuse has skyrocketed to be the number one issue reported and verified to Adult Protective Services staff – and that’s only the tip of the iceberg, as so much abuse goes unreported. This session will outline red flags of elder financial abuse and the latest scams facing older adults.

PA Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) Multifamily Affordable Housing Conference: Housing services offers educational opportunities for managers and service coordinators to increase capacity to design and implement effective service programs. These trainings and forums expose staff to resources, strategies, and best practices in service-enriched housing.

Elder Investment Fraud and Financial Exploitation Prevention Program for Tax Collectors: This is a research-based program that educates professionals who routinely work with older Pennsylvanians to recognize when their older clients may be vulnerable to or victims of financial abuse, particularly those with mild cognitive impairment. The program also teaches professionals how to refer these at-risk patients to our department or the local adult protective services office.

Fraud: How to Stop the Scourge in Your Library for Library Professionals: Losing money or possessions to scams, fraud, and exploitation is harmful for any patron, but it can be especially devastating to older adults, who may not be able to earn back what they’ve lost. In this session you will learn about resources provided by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission on combating fraud. You will hear from librarians who will address how they are combating this scourge in their library. Our goal is to have you feel empowered to help your regulars combat the constant pressure of fraudsters.

Spending Plans – A Roadmap to Financial Success: This presentation focuses on the need for a spending plan so that people can achieve their financial goals – highlighting the differences between wants and needs; setting SMART goals; creating a spending plan; putting the plan into action; and periodically reviewing goals and spending plans in order to ensure that you can stay on track.
