Harrisburg – Pennsylvania’s civil rights commission will hold its monthly public meeting in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, to discuss equal opportunity issues in township schools recently raised by parents and others.
The meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. at Widener University, Building A180, 3700 Vartan Way, Harrisburg.
The agenda will include statistical reports of issues such as unequal discipline and other practices that may be hindering equal access to educational opportunities for district students.
“Our mission is to promote equal opportunity for everyone in Pennsylvania,” Executive Director JoAnn Edwards said. “The prosperity of our communities and our economy are directly tied to equal educational opportunity.
“When students are denied equal opportunity, we pay the price in higher dropout rates, dependence on public benefits, increased crime and a workforce that cannot meet employer needs. We simply cannot afford not to examine these issues.”
The public will have a brief opportunity to address the commission with civil rights concerns or the work of their organizations in promoting equal opportunity. Those who RSVP will be given priority in the speaking order.
RSVPs and requests for accommodations for language or disabilities can be made by contacting Cathy Walters at 717-783-8272 or cawalters@pa.gov. Please make accommodation requests as soon as possible to help us meet your needs.
Commissioners and staff welcome comments on civil rights or equal opportunity issues. Commissioners will not be able to listen to details concerning specific, open complaint investigations.
