IN-SEASON TROUT STOCKING UNDERWAY TO REPLENISH WATERWAYS

In-Season Trout Stocking Underway to Replenish Waterways

HARRISBURG, Pa. (April 15) – While the official opening days of trout season may have passed, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) reminds anglers that stocking will continue during the season to keep fish plentiful in waterways.

"It's a fact of life that spring can be one of the busiest times of year, especially for families," said Brian Wisner, Director of the PFBC Bureau of Hatcheries. "If you haven't been able to get out fishing yet, our in-season stocking program ensures that there will still be plenty of trout to be caught for weeks beyond opening day."

In-season stockings are now occurring statewide to replenish creeks and lakes with brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout. Of the approximately 3.2 million trout to be stocked by the PFBC this season, roughly 40% will go into the water from mid-April through mid-May. During the month of May alone, nearly 600,000 adult trout will be stocked. The average size trout stocked by the PFBC measures 11-inches in length, although larger trophy-sized brood fish will also be added to waterways.

Among places that will receive in-season stockings are the Keystone Select Stocked Trout Waters. Under this program, 22 stream sections across the state are stocked with high concentrations of large trout averaging 14"-22" in length. This year, approximately 6,500 large trout will be distributed among the waters, which are regulated under Delayed Harvest/Artificial Lures Only regulations. Anglers who catch these fish must release them until the trout may be legally harvested beginning on June 15th.

In addition to trout raised at PFBC hatcheries, cooperative nurseries operated by sportsmen's groups and other organizations will continue to stock trout into waterways open to public angling. A large percentage of the approximately 1-million adult trout raised by these groups will be added to the water throughout the in-season period.
