HARRISBURG, Pa. (April 3) – The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is alerting boaters that the marina launch at the Walnut Creek access area in Fairview, Erie County, will be closed from April 5 to approximately April 20 to perform dredging within the marina basin.
The access area will remain open during this time. Anglers may use the parking lots and fish from the pier and shoreline. Boaters can use the “roof-top” launch for canoes, kayaks and smaller boats. This launch is located directly south of the marina. However, it is a shallow launch and does not provide access for larger boats.
Weather permitting, the marina officially opens on May 1, at which time boaters who have purchased slips can dock their boats for the season.
The PFBC recently completed a $3.77 million project at the access area which involved constructing a new 800-foot concrete panel wall to encase the existing, deteriorated channel wall on the east bank. The wall connects to a new fishing pier that meets standards for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Also, approximately 850 feet of rock riprap slope protection along the west bank was removed and replaced with a permanent underwater keyway and rock platform, which will be used for future maintenance and dredging of the creek bottom. The new structure also provides improved slope protection for the stream bank.
The marina and access area provides lighted, paved parking lots, a building with PFBC officials, a weigh station and rest rooms. Licenses and launch permits also can be purchased at the marina.
