Harrisburg, PA – PA Human Relations Commission (PHRC) Executive Director JoAnn Edwards today issued a statement on the signing of anti-discrimination Executive Orders by Governor Wolf.
“PHRC applauds Governor Wolf for taking this important step in ensuring equality. PHRC stands ready and supports the governor in his stance that Pennsylvania must do more to protect all of its citizens from discrimination. PHRC is charged with specific statutory duties to implement Pennsylvania’s anti-discrimination laws and has the responsibility to end unlawful discrimination and promote equal opportunity for all Pennsylvanians.
“Over the years, PHRC has seen its staff compliment shrink from 187 in 2009 to 80 at this time, as a result of budget cuts and increased costs. PHRC is mindful that it will be the agency responsible for enforcing the Executive Orders, as well as any legislation enacted to add LGBT individuals as a protected class under the Human Relations Act. The PHRC Commissioners and staff take their responsibilities very seriously. In order for PHRC to continue providing justice to all Pennsylvania citizens who file claims of discrimination, the Commission urges the legislature to take steps to restore a sustainable budget to the state’s civil rights agency.”
