PA Human Relations Commission Coatesville Public Meeting Rescheduled

Equal Opportunity Recommendations to Coatesville School District on Agenda

Harrisburg – The state’s civil rights commission will hold its monthly public meeting in Coatesville on March 24. The meeting will begin with regular public business at 5 p.m. at Hutchinson Memorial United AME Church 825 East Chestnut Street.

At 6 p.m. commission staff will report on equal opportunity recommendations to the Coatesville School District, followed by public comments. The commission rescheduled the meeting from the earlier announced start time to accommodate more community members who wish to observe and address the commission.

Commission staff and partners from the U.S. Department of Justice and the NAACP collaborated on recommendations to Coatesville School District officials following the fall 2013 public disclosure of sexually and racially demeaning texts exchanged between district personnel.

“We are working with the school district and our partners to help ensure that Coatesville students have the opportunity to learn in a fair and unbiased environment,” Chairman Gerry Robinson said. “We want to give community members the opportunity to continue to voice their concerns regarding barriers to equal educational opportunity, and to hear what the commission and our partners are doing to address their concerns.”

During the meeting, the public will be given an opportunity to address the commission on a first-come-first-served basis, as time permits. Priority will be given to those who RSVP by Friday, March 21.

RSVPs and requests for accommodations for language or disability can be made by contacting Cathy Walters at 717-783-8272 or cawalters@pa.gov. Please give at least five business days for accommodation requests.

Commissioners and staff welcome comments on civil rights or equal opportunity issues. Commissioners will not be able to listen to details concerning specific, open complaints or complaints they may have to rule on in the future.
