Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission to hold Implicit Bias training with ADL of Philadelphia

HARRISBURG, PA –The Pennsylvania Relations Commission (PHRC), the state’s leading civil rights enforcement agency, will host Implicit Bias training at PHRC Regional Offices in Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh.

The trainings will launch in February and will be led by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of Philadelphia. Each office will have an individual training.

Implicit Biases are the attitudes, stereotypes, and unintentional actions (positive or negative) toward members of a group merely because of their membership in that group.

“In order for the PHRC to better assist those experiencing discrimination or hate, our staff must know how to face their own unconscious biases,” said Chad Dion Lassiter, MSW, Executive Director of the PHRC. “I am pleased to have the ADL of Philadelphia assist our staff with this important training.”

“Discussions about bias, whether conscious or unconscious, can be difficult and even painful,” said Randi Boyette, ADL Senior Associate Regional Director, Education, “However, the only way we can better understand one another and be allies to each other is to engage in the kind of meaningful conversations that help us understand and challenge our own biases, and allow us to see, acknowledge and ultimately challenge bias in others. It will be a privilege to engage in this work with PHRC staff.”

The PHRC’s mission is to promote equal opportunity for all and enforce Pennsylvania’s civil rights laws that protect people from unlawful discrimination. PHRC urges anyone who has experienced acts of discrimination or hate to file a complaint with the PHRC by calling 717.787.4410. Information and resources are also available at www.PHRC.pa.gov.
