The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work Spring 2025 Evening of Recognition

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) is proud to announce Chad Dion Lassiter, MSW, as the keynote speaker for the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work Spring 2025 Evening of Recognition, to be held on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and livestreamed via YouTube.

The event will honor students graduating in December 2024, April 2025, June 2025, and August 2025, celebrating their academic accomplishments and commitment to the values of social justice, equity, and service.

The evening begins with a reception featuring light refreshments from 5:00–6:30 PM, followed by the recognition ceremony at 7:00 PM.

Chad Dion Lassiter serves as the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and was appointed in 2023 by President Joe Biden to the Presidential Advisory Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunities for Black Americans. Recognized as one of the nation’s leading voices on race and social policy, Lassiter brings more than 20 years of experience working to eliminate racism, build inclusive communities, and empower future leaders in the social work field.

In addition to his public leadership, Lassiter co-founded Black Men at Penn, the first Ivy League Black male group of social workers, and has received numerous accolades including being named Most Influential African American Leader (2010–2022) by the Philadelphia Tribune. He was also inducted into the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice Alumni Hall of Fame.

Reflecting on the invitation, Lassiter shared, “It is an absolute honor to address the next generation of social workers—individuals who are stepping into a world that urgently needs their compassion, courage, and commitment to justice. I’m deeply moved to be part of such a meaningful moment in their journey.”

The School of Social Work invites faculty, family, friends, and the broader community to join in this celebration as they recognize the Class of 2025 and welcome Chad Dion Lassiter's powerful message of equity, justice, and unity.

"Social workers at the University of Pittsburgh are trained to be leaders, advocates and change-makers, transforming lives and communities with their unwavering commitment to social justice,” said Kyaien Conner, PhD, LSW, MPH, Director, Center on Race and Social Problems, University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work. “This year's graduating class of social workers is exiting the academy in a particularly challenging political and cultural climate.  The message from Executive Director Lassiter will give them confidence and encouragement as they step into their new roles, and embody the hope and resilience needed to address the most pressing social issues of our time."
