Harrisburg, PA —The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) is pleased to announce the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus (PLCB) and the PLCB Foundation will present Chad Dion Lassiter, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, with the Spirit of Community Award in recognition of his leadership in advancing civil rights, racial justice, and equity across the Commonwealth.
“Executive Director Lassiter’s unwavering commitment to social justice mirrors the founding spirit of the Caucus,” said PHRC Chair Curtis Jones. “Lassiter’s statewide civil rights outreach embodies the values and vision championed by Leader Irvis more than five decades ago.
The Spirit of Community Award recognizes an individual whose leadership, service, and commitment to equity strengthens communities and inspires collective progress.
“Receiving the Spirit of Community Award is a humbling affirmation of our shared commitment to justice and equality,” said PHRC Executive Director Chad Dion Lassiter, MSW. This honor inspires me to continue strengthening our communities and advancing equity across Pennsylvania.”
“The Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus Foundation is making great choice for this award,” said PHRC Commissioner Michael Hardiman. “The totality of Executive Director Lassiter’s work is to protect, strengthen, and learn from members of communities throughout the Commonwealth.”
The Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus was formally organized by then–House Majority Leader K. Leroy Irvis during the 1973–74 legislative session. Leader Irvis envisioned a united group of Black legislators who would work collectively to address systemic inequities and promote meaningful social change. Since its founding, the PLBC has championed legislation and policies that support Black and underserved communities. The PLBC Foundation extends this mission through scholarships, youth engagement, community programming, and recognition awards such as the Community of Spirit Award.
“Executive Director Lassiter leads with empathy and purpose,” said PHRC Pittsburgh Regional Director Dr. La Dawn Robinson. “His vision for equity isn’t just something he talks about, it is the focus of our work every day and motivates us to serve all Pennsylvanians with dignity.”
“Faith and agency have been the hallmark of Executive Director Lassiter’s career," said PHRC Enforcement Director Sherwood T. Goodenough. "During his tenure, he has visited every corner of the Commonwealth, has been a model of service to God, country, and community, and a pioneer in advocating for the rights of the many.”
The Spirit of Community Award will be presented during the Annual Chairman’s Reception on Wednesday, May 6 by PLBC Chairman Napoleon Nelson and PLBC Foundation Chairwoman Selena King.
