Muncy Access Area Closed Due to Unsafe Conditions

HARRISBURG, Pa. (July 8) — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) announced today that it has closed the Muncy access area in Lycoming County due to unsafe water conditions created by a sandbar.

Muncy provides boat access to the West Branch of the Susquehanna River east of Williamsport.

The boat launch at the Muncy access has been regularly plagued by a sandbar just offshore due to sediment deposits from the outflow of another water just upstream of this launch area.

As the water level decreases, canoe and kayak users are forced to wade through the sediment – or deep mud - and over the sandbar to access the river. The sediment can become several feet deep, posing a threat to individuals who may find their feet stuck.

On Thursday, July 7, a woman attempting to wade to the river found herself stuck in the sediment and had to be rescued by other paddlers. She was not hurt.

In order to minimize the chances of a drowning at the site from a lone paddler or a swimmer wading out to the river, the access area has been closed and will remain closed until further notice.

A barricade and signs have been placed at the site to inform users.
