Overview

State Police Youth Week takes place at the Elmer Hafer Youth Camp. Sponsored by the American Legion, the State Police, and the National Guard, this program gives students firsthand experience in many aspects of law enforcement and the military. It enhances leadership skills, discipline, and self-esteem, while preparing cadets morally, intellectually, and physically to become future leaders.

Camp is held annually in June at Messiah University, Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County.

This is not a recreational camp. It is a six-day program for students interested in a career in law enforcement or the military.

Cadets participate in a wide variety of instructional sessions with the State Police and National Guard.

Activities and demonstrations include:

  • Police scenarios
  • Physical fitness training
  • Drill and ceremony
  • Forensics
  • Traffic and criminal law
  • Water survival
  • Marksmanship
  • Teambuilding

Recreational activities will be scheduled as time permits.

Students should:

  • Be physically fit
  • Be in good health
  • Have an average or above academic record

Cadets must be Pennsylvania residents between the ages of 15-17 before the start of camp, and can't turn 18 during camp.

A fee of $300 includes meals and lodging, and is nonrefundable.

The fee is paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post, District, Auxiliary Unit, or any civic group who may sponsor you.

Price is subject to change.

Transportation is the responsibility of the sponsoring group or cadet’s parents.

  • Firing Range: cadets are taught firearms use by certified NRA instructors
  • Refreshing Mountain: cadets learn teambuilding skills
  • State Police Academy: cadets experience some of the training troopers receive
  • Fort Indiantown Gap: cadets observe military operations and equipment

Cadets who previously attended are not eligible to re-apply.
