PSE Workforce Credential Gaps

The visualizations in this dashboard display the annual demand for employees with a postsecondary credential or training, annual production (or supply) of college graduates, and the difference between these two values, which are referred to here as workforce credential gaps. Values are further disaggregated by region, and major career clusters.

Data for these visualizations are derived from various sources. The supply of postsecondary graduates from Pennsylvania postsecondary institutions is derived from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Completions survey. IPEDS is a federal institutional survey system administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), an office of the U.S. Department of Education. The average number of credentials awarded by postsecondary institutions in Pennsylvania between 2019-20 and 2023-24 is used in this dashboard. Employment projections came from Lightcast, a widely-used labor market analytics firm whose data are commonly used by states to analyze employment data and trends. Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry data, as well as other state, federal and private data sources, form the foundation of Lightcast’s employment projections.

A Technical Appendix provides detailed information about all data sources, data elements, and analyses utilized in the creation of these dashboards. A set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are also provided to address common questions about the dashboards.
