During Women’s History Month, the Shapiro Administration is pleased to announce that Ashley Walkowiak has been appointed the new Executive Director of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Women. The Governor’s Advisory Commissions make recommendations to the Governor on policy and legislation that impacts the communities they represent.
“I’m eager to keep women at the forefront of policy initiatives that are happening across state government to include ongoing work on maternal health, human trafficking prevention, and menstrual equity,” said Executive Director Ashley Walkowiak. “During my time spent volunteering as Chair of the Cumberland County Commission for Women, my team held the first childcare town hall in our local area and I’m excited to build on that momentum as we strategize at the state level. It’s an honor to represent women in vital policy influencing spaces.”
Ashley brings a robust background in advocacy, policy development, and interagency collaboration, having served in the Pennsylvania Office of Victim Advocate, the Human Relations Commission, and the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Through nearly 20 years of public service, she has navigated complex legislative environments, managed stakeholder relationships, and fostered collaborative solutions to advance the needs of Pennsylvanians.
The Governor’s Advisory Commission on Women was re-established by Governor Josh Shapiro through an Executive Order in June 2023. The purpose of the Commission is to gather information regarding Pennsylvania women’s experiences and needs; review, evaluate, and assess programs affecting them; provide the Governor with information and recommendations regarding how to best meet their needs; and provide information about programs and services that may be relevant to Pennsylvania women’s needs.
