HARRISBURG, PA - Inspector General Grayling G. Williams received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Outstanding Career in Law Enforcement at the City, State and Federal Levels from the noted Brooklyn Technical High School last night.
Inspector General Williams, appointed to office in January by Gov. Tom Wolf, was one of four graduates of the school honored with Distinguished Alumni Awards for professional achievement and service to society. The award recognizes alumni “who have achieved high levels of excellence in their career fields or academic area and have in some way given back to the community.”
Since its founding in 1922, Brooklyn Technical High School has been a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-based education. U.S. News & World Report ranks Brooklyn Tech the 93rd best high school in the country.
“The Tech years were tough but they taught me that there isn’t anything that a properly motivated person can’t achieve. My motivation to graduate was my fear of embarrassing my grandmother, who raised my older brother and me, and also fear of failing to achieve an important goal,” Inspector General Williams said. “I want to thank the Alumni Foundation for this award. I will do my best to continue to honor my outstanding alma mater.”
After graduation from Tech, Inspector General Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of New Haven and a master’s degree in management from Johns Hopkins University.
Inspector General Williams began his law enforcement career with the Yale University Police Department. He served 22 years as a special agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, often working undercover, and was an instructor at the DEA academy in Quantico, Va., teaching undercover operations, informant management and surveillance techniques. He also conducted training in Argentina, Poland, the United Kingdom and the Caribbean.
The Inspector General later served two years as Counternarcotics Advisor, a presidential appointment requiring U.S. Senate confirmation, to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. He is a member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, the Police Executive Research Forum and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.
