    PLCB Invests $3.6 Million to Help Communities Prevent Underage and Dangerous Drinking

    Harrisburg – The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) today announced that it is investing more than $3.6 million in communities across the commonwealth to help prevent underage and dangerous drinking, support local prevention efforts, and build healthier, safer communities.

    These grants are one of the many ways the PLCB helps strengthen Pennsylvania beyond its role as a retailer. By investing in prevention, education, and community partnerships, the agency works to ensure the benefits of beverage alcohol sales are returned to the people and communities it serves.

    This year, of 133 grant applications received, 90 organizations from 46 counties across Pennsylvania were awarded a total of $3,621,313 in reimbursement-based grants. The maximum award for each two-year grant is $50,000.

    Of the grants awarded:

    • 30 college and university grants will help schools develop strategies to reduce underage and dangerous alcohol use through surveys and assessments, enforcement efforts, attendance at alcohol education conferences, training for resident assistants, peer education programs, and evidence-informed programs like EVERFI AlcoholEdu®.
    •  26 will fund community law-enforcement efforts for targeted underage patrols, training, community outreach, and equipment.
    • 22 will be used to support community and nonprofit organizations by funding initiatives such as MADD’s Power of Parents®, MADD’s Parents Who Host Lose the Most®, public service announcements, and enforcement efforts.
    • Six will go to primary and secondary schools and support organizations to fund various programs aimed at reaching students, such as social norms media campaigns, guest speakers, community outreach, and MADD’s Parents Who Host Lose the Most®.
    • Three aimed at peer-to-peer outreach, digital media campaigns, and public service announcements will go to for-profit organizations.
    • Three will go to local government organizations for initiatives like the Strengthening Families Program, advertisements, community events, radio advertisements, and the All Stars Prevention Program.

    The PLCB has awarded more than $28 million in RUDD grants since inception of the program in 1999. Examples of funded initiatives include increased underage police patrols and enhanced law enforcement initiatives, MADD’s Power of Parents® campaigns, college alcohol assessment surveys, and peer education and training programs.

    The PLCB works to educate the public about the risks of underage and dangerous drinking through a variety of other avenues throughout the year, by:

    • Providing millions of dollars in alcohol education grants to schools, law enforcement, and community organizations
    • Offering Responsible Alcohol Management Program (RAMP) training and resources to licensees to promote responsible alcohol service
    • Hosting an annual alcohol education conference for partners in prevention
    • Providing training and technical assistance to law enforcement and other organizations working to address the issues related to irresponsible consumption
    • Supporting collegiate student leadership and youth prevention initiatives
    • Supplying prevention materials for parents, educators, and community groups
    • Working closely with local partners to address dangerous and underage drinking

    This work has earned significant statewide recognition. The bureau received the Mary Ann Bowman Prevention Award from the Pennsylvania DUI Association, honoring the PLCB’s leadership and unwavering commitment to prevention, responsibility, and community safety.

    Over nine decades, the PLCB has evolved from a system created to restrict access to alcohol into an organization centered on connection, service, and public good. As a statewide retailer and regulator, the PLCB works to support economic growth and reinvest in programs that keep people safe and benefit Pennsylvania’s communities.

    The PLCB regulates the distribution of beverage alcohol in Pennsylvania, operates Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores statewide, and licenses more than 20,000 alcohol producers, retailers, and handlers.
