Harrisburg – The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) Bureau of Alcohol Education received the prestigious Mary Ann Bowman Prevention Award from the Pennsylvania DUI Association during its recent annual conference.
The PLCB Bureau of Alcohol Education was selected as this year’s Mary Ann Bowman Prevention Award recipient based on their mission working throughout Pennsylvania to:
- Deliver “no-use” and “zero tolerance” messages to those under the age of 21
- Encourage responsibility and moderation for any adult age 21 and over who chooses to drink alcoholic beverages
- Promote responsible alcohol service and practices among licensees and those who serve beverage alcohol in Pennsylvania
“We are extremely proud of the work done by the PLCB Bureau of Alcohol Education, which has an unwavering commitment to discouraging underage and excessive alcohol consumption and promoting responsible, legal consumption,” said Board Chairman Darrell Clarke. “The PLCB is grateful for this recognition by the Pennsylvania DUI Association, a respected leader in working toward the elimination of impaired driving and the harm that it can cause.”
The PLCB works to educate the public about the dangers of underage and dangerous drinking through a variety of avenues, including a free annual alcohol educational conference, the creation and distribution of a wide range of educational materials, Responsible Alcohol Management Program (RAMP) training and resources for licensees, student leader and law enforcement training, and training and technical assistance for organizations working to address the issues related to irresponsible consumption. The PLCB provides millions of dollars in alcohol education grants to communities, educational institutions, and law enforcement agencies each year.
The Mary Ann Bowman Prevention Award is given in memory of Mary Ann Bowman, an extraordinary person and prevention professional. Mary Ann was the prevention education coordinator for Twin Lakes and also served as the DUI coordinator for Somerset County. She was instrumental in founding the Somerset County Boys & Girls Club and was the founder of the Red Ribbon Campaign in Somerset County. She also secured funding to start Somerset County Drug Free Communities. She was on the board of the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance and actively involved with the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, Students Against Drunk Driving, and several other notable organizations that served youth. Mary Ann served on the PA DUI Association Board of Directors for 20 years. One of Mary Ann’s proudest accomplishments was being president when the DUI Association acquired its current headquarters in Harrisburg. Mary Ann is missed by all who knew her.
The Pennsylvania Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Association is a professional organization working to address the DUI problem in all of its stages – from prevention to enforcement, up to and including adjudication and rehabilitation.
The PLCB regulates the distribution of beverage alcohol in Pennsylvania, operates more than 560 Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores statewide, and licenses more than 20,000 alcohol producers, retailers, and handlers. The PLCB also works to reduce and prevent dangerous and underage drinking through partnerships with schools, community groups, and licensees. The PLCB reinvests in the state’s economy by returning taxes and profits – nearly $23.5 billion since the agency’s inception – to Pennsylvania’s General Fund, financing Pennsylvania’s schools, health and human services programs, law enforcement, and public safety and community initiatives. The PLCB also provides financial support for the Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement, the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, other state agencies, and local municipalities across the state.
