Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)

Pine Creek Running Through the "Grand Canyon" of Pennsylvania in Leonard Harrison State Park

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is responsible for protecting Pennsylvania’s air, land, and water so communities, farms, and wildlife can stay healthy.

Protecting the Land

DEP protects the land so farmers can grow food safely and sustainably. This includes reducing runoff into streams and supporting practices that protect farmland for future generations.

One way you can take part is learning about our recycling program. Recycling and Disposal Not only does this protect land, but it also protects water resources.

Clean Water Protection

DEP monitors rivers, lakes, and groundwater to make sure water stays clean for drinking, recreation, and farming. We work to prevent pollution, test water quality, and protect watersheds throughout Pennsylvania. Learn more at My Water and consider what you can do to help – like conserve water.

Clean Air Monitoring

DEP checks air quality across the state to help reduce pollution and protect public health. January is Radon Action Month. Radon is an odorless radioactive gas found in soil that can enter the home through cracks in the foundation. It is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking in the United States. Testing your home is an easy way to protect yourself. Learn more at My Air and clicking Radon.

And for fun…Pennsylvania DEP Falcon Cam!

Peregrine falcons have made their home year after year on the 15th floor of the Rachel Carson State office building in downtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. They are followed by four cameras, including infrared for nighttime viewing, streaming fulltime year-round to give the residents of Pennsylvania and the world a glimpse into the life of these magnificent creatures.
