Bellefonte, PA - State Correctional Institution at Benner Township Superintendent Morris Houser reports the death of inmate Ramon Ortiz on December 5, 2022.
Ortiz, age 35, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 12:18 AM on December 5, 2022. Emergency personnel were notified and CPR was administered until EMS arrived.
Inmate Ortiz was transferred to Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pa., where he was pronounced dead at 12:57 AM.
In accordance with state policy, Pennsylvania State Police were notified and will conduct and investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Centre County Coroner’s Office.
Ortiz was serving a 5-to 10-year sentence for Aggravated Assault on a Philadelphia County conviction. He had been at Benner Township since July 6, 2022.
Facility staff has notified the inmate’s next-of-kin.
