Conditions Currently Screened

This link shows all conditions currently screened for in babies born in Pennsylvania.  Some hospitals opt to screen for additional conditions, discuss with your birthing facility to verify what conditions will be screened for. View the newborn screening conditions list.

Information on Screening

This brochure describes the various newborn screening tests your baby will receive.

Baby's First Test - Clearinghouse for newborn screening information that provides current educational and family resources about newborn screening at the local, state, and national levels.

Save Babies Through Screening Foundation - Organization whose mission is to improve the lives of babies by preventing disabilities and early death by disorders detected through newborn screening.

Screening Results

The Pennsylvania Newborn Screening and Follow-up program is only able to provide screening results for babies born within the state of Pennsylvania.  Please direct screening result requests for babies born outside of Pennsylvania to the newborn screening program in the state where the baby was born.  Results for infants can be obtained from your primary care provider.  If you are unable to contact your provider you may request a copy of your child’s newborn screening here.

NCAA Sickle Cell Results Update

The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Media Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) requires a sickle cell solubility test for a sickle-cell result to satisfy the legislative requirement.  All other types of sickle cell screening, including the Isoelectric screening performed by the state of Pennsylvania’s contracted laboratory, do not meet the legislative requirement.  As of June 1, 2025 the Pennsylvania Newborn Screening and Follow-up Program will no longer provide newborn screening results requested for NCAA clearance purposes.

How can an appointment with a genetic specialist help your child?

Genetic services are an important component of healthcare.  In order to help ensure that all families in Pennsylvania can access these services, the Pennsylvania team of the federally funded New York Mid-Atlantic Caribbean (NYMAC) Regional Genetics Network created two infographics, one aimed at families and one for healthcare providers, describing when a genetic referral may be appropriate and how genetic services can benefit a family.  The family infographic is available in several languages.  Both are accessible for screen readers and can be accessed and downloaded for free from the NYMAC Team PA webpage, which also includes many helpful resources for both families and providers: https://nymacgenetics.org/pennsylvania
