Governor Corbett Recognizes Academic Achievement of Two Wilson Area Schools; Presents Governor’s Award for Excellence in Academics

Wilson – Governor Tom Corbett today presented the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Academics to two schools in Wilson Area School District, Northampton County.

Williams Township Elementary School and Wilson Borough Elementary School each were presented a banner for their academic performance.

“These schools demonstrate the exceptional commitment and dedication of students, parents, taxpayers, teachers and administrators in preparing our children for a successful and bright future,” Corbett said.  “The Wilson Area community is to be applauded for providing the necessary resources to ensure the success of students.”

Based on the 2012-13 School Performance Profile, www.paschoolperformance.org, Williams Township Elementary School attained a 92, the highest in the district and the fourth highest of all 63 public schools in Northampton County.

Wilson Borough Elementary School followed with a score of 91, the fifth highest in the county.

“We are very proud of all our students in the Wilson Area School District,” said Wilson Area School District Superintendent Doug Wagner.  “Williams Township Elementary School and Wilson Borough Elementary School exemplify the outstanding work being done by our students and staff across the district.  The students, teachers, school staff, parents, and community have worked hard to achieve this level of success.  Additionally, they recognize that the progress we have made thus far must be followed with continued hard work and dedication.  I have no doubt that we are up to the challenge and will continue to experience increases in student achievement.”

The School Performance Profile provides parents, taxpayers and educators with access to a comprehensive, straight-forward and user-friendly resource that provides detailed information about the academic performance of all public schools, including traditional public schools, brick-and-mortar and cyber charter schools, and career and technology centers.

The profile includes results of the statewide assessments and other measures of student achievement, such as academic growth, graduation rate, attendance rate and promotion rate. The profile also includes raising the achievement of all students and historically underperforming students, such as English language learners, economically disadvantaged students and students with disabilities.

The Governor, First Lady, Lt. Governor and officials of the Corbett administration are visiting high-performing schools across Pennsylvania to present them with Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Academics. Statewide, 428 school buildings attained a score of 90 or higher.

“I applaud Wilson Area School District for its excellent educational programs, quality teachers, support staff and administrative team that are dedicated to raising student achievement,” Corbett said.  “I encourage all schools across Pennsylvania to follow Wilson’s lead.”

Since taking office in 2011, Governor Corbett has put into place education policies to increase accountability, enhance transparency and provide support systems for public schools. These include a new, comprehensive educator evaluation system that relies on multiple measures of student achievement; improved academic standards and assessments to ensure students are prepared for postsecondary opportunities; and no-cost, high-quality educational resources, such as a voluntary model curriculum, lesson plans and classroom diagnostic tools.
