Governor Corbett Commends DeVilbiss Healthcare for Bringing Jobs Back to Somerset; Touts the Benefits of Make It in PA

Somerset Continuing to advance his JOBS1st PA initiative, Department Governor Tom Corbett today toured DeVilbiss Healthcare LLC, a medical device manufacturer that recently moved its China-based manufacturing back to its global headquarters in Somerset County.

“We are building a stronger Pennsylvania where innovative companies like DeVilbiss Healthcare can grow and compete in the global marketplace,” Corbett said. “Through our commitment to putting jobs first, we are sending a message to manufacturers throughout the nation and around the world that businesses thrive when they make their products in Pennsylvania.”

Located in Somerset, DeVilbiss Healthcare’s global headquarters are housed in a 152,000-square-foot facility which houses manufacturing, distribution and warehouse space, together with research and development and corporate offices. The company is a world leader in the design, manufacture, and marketing of respiratory medical products that address the respiratory needs of patients in institutional and homecare settings.

In August 2012, based on continued quality concerns, cost increases, strengthening of the Chinese yuan and higher than anticipated working capital investment, DeVilbiss determined the optimal solution was to relocate the production of the China-based products back to Somerset. This project was financed by Somerset Trust Company and backed by a USDA business and industry loan guarantee.

Today, DeVilbiss has more than 200 employees at its Somerset facility. Bringing China-based product lines back to the Somerset facility has created a total of more than 25 direct assembly, engineering and quality positions and several indirect vendor jobs.

“I strongly believe it is Pennsylvanians – their creativity, ingenuity, talents and skills – who drive companies to make Pennsylvania home,” said Corbett. “DeVilbiss Healthcare’s decision to move production back to Somerset is a testament to the company’s visionary leaders and the hardworking men and women that are producing innovative products for people throughout the world.”

Today’s visit continues the momentum of Gov. Corbett’s JOBS1st PA initiative, which was first launched in 2012 and has created a comprehensive roadmap to economic recovery that harnessed the state’s resources and talents to prioritize private-sector job creation and retention.

Building upon JOBS1st PA’s successes, Gov. Corbett’s 2014-15 budget places focus on Make It in PA investments to ensure the continued resurgence of Pennsylvania’s manufacturing, life sciences and technology sectors.
