Governor Corbett Issues Statement on US Airways’ Decision to Close Operations Control Center

Harrisburg–Governor Tom Corbett today issued the following statement in response to US Airways’ recent decision to move its Operations Control Center to Dallas, Texas.  US Airways has made clear that their decision is based on the need to align their operations center with their established headquarters in Dallas.

“On behalf of the hardworking US Airways employees, we are disappointed that the company has decided to move their operations control center to Dallas,” Corbett said.

“Our job now is to immediately work with the US Airways employees to connect them to new opportunities should they choose to stay in Pennsylvania. We value their work ethic and welcome them to stay in the region. In that effort, I have directed my Secretary of Labor and Industry to activate the state Rapid Response workforce team to assist with job training and placement. The Rapid Response team will coordinate with local partners to retrain and connect these employees with regional job openings that can tap their specialized technical and communications skills.”

The Department of Labor & Industry’s Rapid Response unit provides workers who are facing a layoff with information on retraining, continuing education, job-seeking, health insurance and unemployment benefits to help them transition to re-employment.

“The Pittsburgh region has recently become a beacon of economic activity and a state-of-the-art facility in the Airport Corridor is a desirable location for prospective employers. I have directed my Secretary of Department of Community and Economic Development to work with our local partners to develop a plan of action to market the facility for new investment and job growth. “
