Governor Corbett Issues Statement on Death of Retired Major General Nick Kafakalas

Harrisburg – Governor Tom Corbett today issued the following statement on the death of retired Major General and former Pennsylvania Adjutant General Nick Kafakalas.

“I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of retired Major General Nick Kafakalas. During my own time in the military, I had the distinct privilege to serve under him. His commitment and dedication to this great country and to those who served under his leadership was unparalleled.

“His service to his country and the commonwealth spanned more than 40 years and both the nation and Pennsylvania are better, safer places because of his dedication. As a recipient of two Silver Stars for Gallantry and a Purple Heart, Major General Kafakalas is a model for each of us to follow in our daily lives.

“He will be missed, but his legacy will endure well into the future. Susan and I extend our deepest sympathies to his family.”

Kafakalas served in France during World War II. He was also a former Commanding General of the 28th Infantry Division and former Pennsylvania Adjutant General. He died today at the age of 93.
