Corbett Administration Announces Economic Growth Initiative Projects

Corbett Administration Announces Economic Growth Initiative Projects

Projects to Create or Sustain Nearly 45,000 Jobs in 58 Redevelopment Projects; 24 Counties to Benefit

Harrisburg – Governor Tom Corbett today announced the award of 58 new Economic Growth Initiative grants.  The projects, totaling more than $133 million were selected for funding.  The announced projects will create more than 45,000 jobs in 24 counties across the state, and joins six projects announced earlier this year.

The program provides grants to local communities for the construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects.

Last year, Corbett reformed the state’s method of funding Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program with a significant redesign, making the process more transparent and objective.  Projects are now selected based upon their job-creation potential, their economic impact, as well as their viability and construction readiness.

“The Economic Growth Initiatives are energizing local economies around our state,” said Corbett.  “Jobs are being created through these projects.  We are transforming oft-neglected parts of our towns into thriving centers of commerce and recreation.

“Brownfields are becoming brownstones.  Creative thinking and careful stewardship are creating opportunities for businesses and families alike as we renew hope in our communities. ”

Prior to Corbett taking office, the state’s spending and borrowing for capital redevelopment assistance had become unsustainable for the state and its taxpayers, growing from $400 million in 1986 to slightly more than $4 billion in 2010.  Corbett also said that the program had strayed considerably from its intended purpose of encouraging and assisting job growth through regional economic development projects.  Last round, the Corbett Administration released $125 million.

Some of the projects selected include funding to revitalize economically-challenged downtown districts  in the Southwest; hospitals  and healthcare facility enhancements in the Lehigh Valley, Southeastern and Central PA; energy sector delivery, environmental and safety enhancements in the Northeast; and parks, museums, libraries and recreational facilities across the state.  The grants range in value from a minimum of $500,000 to a maximum of $5 million.

The next round of Economic Growth Initiative grant applications is opening January 6, 2014.
