Governor’s Residence Gardens Open for ‘Good Gardening, Great Health’ Program

News for Immediate Release

July 13, 2014

Harrisburg – The Governor’s Residence gardens opened to the public today for the “Good Gardening, Great Health” garden tour.  The event was part of the free, monthly “Second Sunday” series scheduled throughout the summer.

“Good Gardening, Great Health” highlighted the latest trends in gardening, including super-foods and herbs, and showcased the health benefits of using fresh, local produce.  Gardening and nutrition experts, as well as local growers were on hand to offer tips and answer questions.

“As an avid gardener, I am excited to feature a program that is focused on the many physical and mental benefits of gardening,” said First Lady Susan Corbett.  “It is my hope that visitors are inspired to plant their own gardens or to buy produce locally, which supports growers right here in Pennsylvania.”

Governor’s Residence Chef Barry Crumlich and WHP 580 host RJ Harris offered culinary demonstrations and visitors had an opportunity to sample healthy recipes throughout the afternoon.

Participating organizations included Buona Foods, Inc.; D&S Produce; Giant Food Stores; Mushroom Farmers of Pennsylvania; Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture – PA Preferred™; and Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Dauphin County.

Each second Sunday through September, visitors are invited to explore the Governor’s Residence gardens from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Each event will highlight a specific theme and feature outdoor, family-friendly activities.
